NHS Donates Supplies to Non-Profit Farm Struggling With Russet Mites

Northcoast Horticulture Supply teamed up with Humboldt Seed Company and Phylos BioScience to donate horticulture supplies to a Humboldt County care package sent to a non-profit farm in Jamaica called Genret Farms.

Liz Hilbig of NHS, Nathaniel Pennington of Humboldt Seed Company, Ellen Markham of Phylos BioScience and Ken Hamik of Humboldt Green.

Nathaniel Pennington from Humboldt Seed Company helped initiate the care package after hearing from Genret Farms that they were struggling with russet mites. He reached out to Steve Gieder of Northcoast Horticulture Supply and asked if NHS could help recommend and provide a donation for natural products that would help solve the crop infestation. NHS loves to give back to the community locally and globally, so they offered to help the non-profit farm Genret Farms out with horticulture supplies and tools.

Liz Hilbig, Store Manager for the McKinleyville Northcoast Horticulture Supply, put together a really nice care package for Genret Farm and was on hand during the donation exchange to offer insight about the best products to use to cure a russet mite infestation without harsh pesticides.

One of the products recommended by Liz and included in the donation package was a one gallon bottle of Lost Coast Plant Therapy, which is a local product that kills soft body insects, their larvae and eggs on contact without using poison. The unique formula of Plant Therapy does not stress the plant and will not damage the flowers. Liz also included Doctor Zymes Eliminator which is an ideal product for integrated pest management to combat russet mites by forming a barrier at the base of the plant to discourage re-infestation. Another horticulture product included was a quart of PureAg Pest Control, a different recipe of essential oils blends to give them another version in the spray rotation. The variety of oil based products in the arsenal will ensure the mites do not develop resistance. A key tool included in the donation package was a lighted handheld microscope for the Farmers at Genret Farms to take out into the field so they can easily check their crop for signs of re-infestation after treatment.

Northcoast Horticulture Supply was happy to see that Humboldt Seed Company and Phylos BioScience helped match the supplies donated so that we could collectively send a greater amount of supplies to help support Genret Farms rid their crop of russet mites. We look forward to following Genret Farms journey to a healthier crop for much needed medicine for the people of Jamaica.

If you know of a non-profit organization or school that could benefit from donated horticulture supplies from NHS, please fill out our online donation request form and email it to info@northcoasths.com. Northcoast Horticulture Supply believes in giving back to the local and global community.
