About NHS Hydroponics
Originally opened as Humboldt Gardening Delivery, Northcoast Horticulture Supply was established in 2002 by a determined gardening enthusiast. NHS had a mission to supply the nations most experienced gardeners with the best products and prices. The original store was located at the corner of 5th and N streets on Highway 101 in Eureka, CA with 1000 sq ft of retail space. As the customer base grew and the product reliability improved, sales began to soar and prompted the need to expand into a new location at 122 West 4th Street. By the Spring of 2006, NHS Eureka's customer base grew at a significant rate and caused its third and final move to its current location of 60 West 4th Street which occupies approximately 15,000 sq. ft. At the time, this was the largest retail store of its kind in the country.
NHS, along with its friendly and knowledgeable staff, became well known in a relatively short period of time. It soon became clear that an additional location would be would be a great move in order to satisfy the customer growth in McKinleyville and the surrounding areas, including Blue Lake and Willow Creek. This vision became a reality on April 20th, 2005 when NHS opened its doors for business at 1580 Nursery Way. Initially, this store only occupied 1800 sq ft of retail/warehouse space. That same year, and for the first time in the U.S., NHS introduced a line of premium nutrients, imported from Holland. NHS pushed this product to the forefront of the retail industry through education and astonishing first hand results. This complete nutrient line, manufactured by House & Garden, is one of the most sold and sought after gardening products in the U.S. By March of 2008, NHS had expanded its retail/warehouse space to over 16,000 sq ft by taking over the entire south wing in the Miller Business Park on Nursery Way. At this time, NHS had not only proven to be a staple in the Humboldt gardening community, but was operating the two largest horticulture supply stores nationwide.
The needs of Humboldt County quickly grew and NHS soon began opening additional locations to ensure the satisfaction and convenience of its ever-growing customer base. With the demand for our exclusive products, along with growth in the local market, NHS opened two new retails locations in 2009. Fortuna, opened in May, helped to satisfy our customer base that was south of Eureka. This location also proved to be easily accessible to our customers who were driving from southern Humboldt. Crescent City, which opened in November, helped us fill a void in the north & Del Norte County. Both stores occupy a total space of approximately 10,000 sq ft. Due to popular demand and years of customer requests, NHS opened its fifth store on April 20th, 2010 in the heart of Humboldt County — Arcata. This location provided the resident gardeners of the community an opportunity to walk to one of our stores and acquire the unique customer service and products that we are known for.
NHS also plays a large role in community outreach in Humboldt & Del Norte Counties. NHS prides itself on making positive changes and additions to its local communities. Sponsoring beach clean-ups and employee sports teams has proven to be a successful tool in maintaining camaraderie between staff, owners and customers alike. NHS has felt the powerful impact it possesses by making large donations to both local and worldwide environmental causes & research campaigns. NHS as a company is always looking to create positive effects and approaches to the community by offering its customers with eco-conscious choices. We employ over 60 local residents and are committed to reducing our carbon footprint by purchasing from local vendors when possible and supporting manufacturers who use green energy.
